Now, this is ridiculous. The good folks at Adland have had their assets frozen by Paypal. The reason? Paypal says they are serving adult content. Dabitch explains it here. And before you go, "Oh, well look at her NAME; there must be adult content!", know that Dabitch is a real, honest-to-god name.
Adland runs the venerable Adlist listserv and hosts a phenomenal archive of commercials and ads. Some of the ads may be racy, especially by Puritan American standards, but they are hardly adult content. You can find worse in any library.
When the people who control the money feel they can also control culture, we're all in trouble.
Google-bomb, anyone?
Right on! Let's start marching! :)

Posted by: dabitch on January 15, 2004 09:21 PMOh yeah, I'm like sooo biased here - but you do have a great point namely: "When the people who control the money feel they can also control culture, we're all in trouble."
How many hundreds of people signed up with paypal, not for ebay bidding ability, but perhaps because access to the archive made the whole signing up deal seem 'worth it'? I know that I helped plenty of people through their (paypals) complicated signup process, as if I was working *for* paypal. Now they freeze our assets, after two years of no trouble, and shut us down.
I'm beginning to think a google bomb might be just what the doctor ordered here, but really all I wish for is an easy way for people to chip a small amount of money towards the large amount I (personally) spend so that they get to see the stuff, and I get to host the stuff, and we need no corporate censors involved. I know. I'm dreaming. Also, I'm drunk.
