I've spent the last few days settling into the new computer Compaq sent me. I guess that they admitted (after all my troubles) that my 725US was a lemon. The replacement they sent me is a Presario 2110US, which has a faster processor (Athlon 4 2000+ vs. Athlon 4 1600+), twice the memory (512Mb vs. 256Mb), and three times the hard drive space (60GB vs. 20 GB). Once I loaded all my old software and documents and tweaked XP to remove unneccessary services, I'll have to admit, it hums along pretty smoothly.
I just hope it is more reliable than my previous one; I cannot be productive without a stable workspace, and for the next few months it is crucial that I be productive. This weekend, I have to finish up conference proposals for the AoIR conference (a paper on broadening notions of peer-review) and for ePoetry 2003 (a discussion of bannerart.org and the aesthetics of limitation); next week (since my students will be on spring break), I'm finishing my chapter for the International Handbook of Virtual Environments, planning the next two events for bannerart.org, and developing a plan for preparing for my exams, which will probably be in early fall.
